This past weekend, we spent some time in the back yard, getting a feel for what we have to work with and what we'd like to accomplish. We also picked a bunch of oranges off our two trees.
We actually picked about twice the amount pictured. And there are still a ton of ripening ones on the tree! We were able to trade our oranges for lemons from a friend's tree. Eventually, we're hoping to set up a kind of gardening co-op with a few different friends, where we all grow certain things and share. Hooray for the barter system! Our yard is in pretty sad shape. We really need to rebuild our fence, for one thing. It's practically falling down in some spots. And the raised beds on the side yard are shored up with railroad ties that are crumbling and rotten.
We want to tear out all the railroad ties and replace them with stone or brick. Along the back fence right now there's a lot of dead or dying plants:
Lots of stuff to tear out and clean up! We really have our work cut out for us. But I'm looking forward to working on these various yard projects, just the same. Since I'm not sure how long cleaning the yard is really going to take, I'm going to start my gardening efforts by planting some things in containers. I'll start with some herbs, maybe. I love the idea of snipping fresh herbs from the garden to use in my cooking! As we make progress, I'll post more pictures! Stay tuned!

I would KILL for that trellis. Watch your back. :) Also, once you get out into the yard and start getting to really know it I'm sure you'll find it has more room for gardening than you think. It's fun to find little niches where you can plant things. I've been working our yard for a few years and I'm still finding "new" spots. Hooray gardening.
What would you do with the trellis? I was planning to rip that thing out of there. Well, at least I was going to get rid of the wisteria or whatever it is that's growing up over the top of it. I also have a huge trellis on the west side of the house. You should come over and assess the situation with me and give me some advice!
dangit! when this post first popped into my reader, i told berek that he needed to sneak me over to your house to steal that trellis/pergola/whatever. and cassie cut in line! keep it, nikol, if only to keep me from you-know-what-ing about it for the next, oh, 50 years. those really are a find. i've been scouring craigslist for similar ones since we moved here.
get me excited about my yard, ladies!
I'll totally come over and talk to you about your yard! When do you want to do it?
I would use the trellis for grapes. I was going to get grapes this year but don't have a trellis, plus we're starting brambles this year. One thing at a time. Brambles should be cut back significantly at the end of the harvest, so if you're ok with a somewhat naked trellis for part of the year then go with it.
Ummm, I saw the trellis first. Who's cutting in line? Not I. Don't fight me Siobhan, I'm pretty sure I could take you in your fragile state. Now when you say the bit about getting you excited about your yard, is that a demand or like a comment that that is what we are currently doing? P.S. when you're well enough for gardening again I'll come help you.
